UQ’s research community excels in quality and impact, contributing solutions to some of the great challenges of our time. Our innovators have made genuinely life-changing advances. For instance, the life-saving Gardasil® cervical cancer vaccine invented at UQ is approved for use in more than 120 countries and is expected to save 250,000 lives annually; the Triple P Positive Parenting Program has reached more than seven million children in 25 countries; GroundProbe® mine-safety technology is used by some of the world’s largest mining companies; and UQ image correction technology is used in two-thirds of the world’s magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machines.

As a comprehensive, research-intensive institution, UQ has considerable strengths in the Symposium’s core themes of food and water, energy and environment, public health and aging. We seek to provoke and encourage interdisciplinary dialogue to identify collaborative solutions to complex global challenges.

UQ ranks in the world’s top 50 as measured by the QS World University Rankings and the Performance Ranking of Scientific Papers for World Universities. The University also ranks 52 in the US News Best Global Universities Rankings, 60 in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings and 77 in the Academic Ranking of World Universities.
